Blyth Match Report

Houghton Rugby Club

Houghton entered their first home game of the season, sitting with 3 Wins from 3.

As the players started to arrive, Blyth had already begun their preparations with an eager warm up. Where Blyth going to stop Houghtons streak?

The game was a real tussle, with both sides not giving an inch in the first 15 minutes.
It was the home side who eventually broke the dead lock. As the versatile Ewan Lydiatt dropped his big shoulder and barged past two players, before showing good pace to score in the corner.
A great touch line Conversion by Jack Sneezham made it 7-0.

This gave Houghton a lift and they started to play rugby.

Lydiatt was again on hand this time as a support player. He delivered a great pass to put fellow centre in, George Greenshields raced down pitch for he’s first of the game. Conversion by Sneezham.

Blyth came back again, unfortunately Houghton’s defence were resilient. Lead by Glen Atkinson, whose tackling power caused Blyth problems all game. Houghton counter attacked after a great Carl Stokoe turnover. Sneezham delivered the miss pass, which seen Greenshields score again.

Houghton were looking to have secured the bonus point as lively Scrum half Ollie Baines made a great break. Linking with Ryan Pink and Lydiatt again. Unfortunately, the referee pulled the side back with a misinterpretation. Sneezham, took the points from the penalty, Houghton lead 19-0.

The second half was all one-way traffic. As the home side ran with pace and energy. A brilliant halfway attack saw Newton Turton break, then link with Nick Ingram who powered over the line. Conversion by Jack.

Keeping momentum going Houghton scored again shortly after. A great forward drive by Allan Widdowfield, a delicate offload to Sneezham who again missed the pass to put Greenshields in for yet another hatrick.

The Houghton pack were outstanding all afternoon and the set piece dominance showed. As the front five drove Blyth within the 22m. A series of short drives, seen Atkinson bound over for a great forward score. Conversion by Sneezham.

Blyth came back into the game for a period, as the home side lost focus. Their lively openside and scrum half got them both front foot, followed by a big carry by the flanker/centre. Unfortunately, Atkinson was not playing nice, as huge rip and strip. Seen Sneezham break and link with Lydiatt. Greenshields powers though and offloaded to Wolfe, however the pass goes down.

The resulting scrum saw Houghton shove the pack back 10 metres. Turton broke and linked with Lydaitt. The ruck was won and an inside line seen second row Allan Widdowfield carry strong into the 22.
Somehow front row forward Allan Scott was on hand. He ran 15 metres, barged the fullback off to score the try of the game.

Blyth came back for a short spell after a missed kick off. The number 8 who lead by example all game got within touching distance.
Eventually the away side scored, through a well worked try.

The away try infuriated the home side. Captain Sneezham ranted behind the posts to the team. This was clearly heard, as the forwards dominated the next 5 mins. Phil Holman, Ryan Graham and Turton were strong. Stokoe immense at the breakdown. Eventually this saw Widdowfield power down the centre to score a brilliant forward try. Conversion by Jack, the referee had enough of the back chat from both sides and blew up slightly early.

Houghton move to top of the league with a 55-7 win.
