It was windy afternoon down at Diary Lane on Saturday 8th February, that didn't stop a strong side travelling from Whitley Bay to take on the mighty Boars.
The Boars feeling like last weeks victory was one they had ground out despite playing very poorly in patches were really looking for a good performance, build phase rugby, suck in the opposition back row before moving to the backs and come away with a big win in front of a sell out Viagra stand!!
The game started well for the home side when the kick off was gathered and 2 phases put together by the pack, on the 3rd phase Big Rob Sewell hit a line straight through the Rangers guard position and proceeded to go another 30 yards putting Houghton into a fantastic attacking position. The Boars pack continued to put phases together with direct running. This paid off shortly afterwards with Big Rob Sewell yet again hit a fantastic line which saw him break three tackles and score - 5 - 0 conversion missed.
In a moment of what can only be described as 'bizarre' Capt. Richy Lydiatt, seeing his hooker Ashy down on the floor advised the ref (Doc) that his player had a head injury - interesting choice of words, Ashy advised it wasn't his head but having selective hearing as a second later Doc enforced the Boars into a change and advised that Ashy could not continue as he had a head injury and would entertain otherwise. Lydiatt potential DOTD moment.
The Boars dominated the restarts from scrums to line-outs as well as open play with some strong rucking and counter rucking throughout this first half giving an excellent platform for the backs to work off, Lee B was in his happy place - running good lines breaking tackles with ease and ran in his first try of the afternoon to make it 10 - 0 conversion missed.
Carl 'half game' Harvey managed just the 15 minutes on the park this week before being stretchered off with a pulled hammy - Marguerite was NOT impressed!!
Rangers flanker no.16 is yellow carded for hands in the ruck - and its well deserved as he's been at it all half.
At some point in this half 'forgive me its difficult playing and remembering without notes the chain of events' the Boars scored another two tries coming from great possession play and hard running from the forwards and finished off with style by the backs - Dan Haddock with his first Boars try finished off a great solo run breaking several tackles, the other try was pure forward filth, pick and goes from rucks until the defence finally gave up and Oli B going over the line. 24 - 0.
Whitley Bay Rangers managed to secure some possession and force their way other the line to reduce the deficit to 24 - 7, their lanky centre running some weaving runs through midfield which put the Boars on the back foot - he did this throughout the game and was a constant threat.
The Boars didn't like this and went back to putting phases together with some big carries from the pack to set up a solid platform for the backs to work from, off the top of a line-out the ball goes from Shepherd to Ridley who holds the defence well before popping a short ball off to Lee B who annihilates the 12 who at least got in his way if nothing else and scores again. - converted 31 - 7.
The half isnt done just yet and Rangers make another break from nowhere really and secure another points as their winger goes in at the corner. 31 - 14 - HT.
HT 31 - 14.
The second half started much like the first with the Boars forwards in charge, despite Rangers bringing on some good quality subs - the Boars however had their secret weapon on the pitch - The Slayer - when the opposition saw him you could see the fear in their eyes!!!
Rangers forwards are slowing everything down and constantly offside, off their feet, handling the ball in rucks and generally making a menace of themselves!! Boars are held up over the line with Rangers bodies lying all over the ball on the wrong side (their number 16) Shepherd frustrated with this had a word with the ref only to have a penalty against him instead of a 5 metre scrum! - possible DOTD moment.
Shortly after this from a line-out a penalty is given to Rangers for nothing much - Rangers go quick which capt. Lydiatt is having non of and nails the penalty taker but he wasn't 10 metres away - Yellow card - DOTD moment guaranteed!!
The Boars have now used all of their subs and are now cycling through them at a rate of knots but they still drew first blood again in the second half with great try by the MOTM Lee B - Shepherd pops the ball off the back of a ruck to Oli B who lacking any sort of gas tries to pass to Lee but the pass his towards his knees, Lee being an absolute wrecking ball picks it up and smashes through the fullback and then forces his way through the rest of the defence ending his third try with most of the opposition back line hanging off him - 36 - 14.
Rangers big lanky centre is at it again with his snake hips slithering through tackles like a lubed up Phillip Schofield slips into...........well you know what!! and scores to make it 36 - 21.
The last try was the hobbit beasting his way past the fullback to score in the corner to end the game at 41 - 21.
FT - 41 - 21.
MOTM - Lee Bainbridge
DOTD - Richy Lydiatt
